Stroke Imaging
-
Rapidly changing therapeutic area
Clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of revascularization treatments and endovascular thrombectomy in patients with acute ischemic stroke and expanded the applicable time window of those revascularization treatments. Aside from advances in treatment methods, imaging-based selection of eligible patients is crucial to success.
-
Role of Imaging
Multimodal imaging evaluation is crucial to determine 1) exclusion of intracranial hemorrhage and stroke-mimickers, 2) assessment of salvageable brain, 3) localization of the vascular occlusion and thrombus, and 4) estimation of collateral circulation. It can be expected that integration of brain imaging and precise collateral perfusion imaging with consideration of time of imaging acquisition will enable personalized assessment and prediction of hemorrhagic transformation in the near future. Sophisticated imaging methods and criteria to select eligible patients for trials of revascularization will open the door to precision medicine in acute ischemic stroke.
